As part of a series of posts I hope to write up on the nature of the night I was reading a book on the American artist Remington. I came across a weird paragraph that mentioned the African explorer Henry Stanley. The book claimed Stanley had a battery that he used to electrically shock African tribal leaders when he shook their hand. Apparently this gave him an air of supernatural power in the eyes of the tribal leaders. The book gave no sources for this claim. This dodgy looking site mentions it. I've only done a short search and came up with this book on Google Books that claims it was an American officer under Stanley who shocked individuals. Although no references there either.
